Call Of The Wild Essays (1191 words) - The Call Of The Wild
Call Of The Wild The main character of the novel, The Call of the Wild, is a St. Bernard and Scotch Shepherd mix, named Buck. As I read the book, I found out that Buck can be very loyal and trustworthy to his master, if his master is loyal to him. Also, at times I found that Buck could turn into an enraged beast very easily. At home, which was a large house called Judge Millers Place, in the sun kissed Santa Clara Valley in California, Buck ruled over all of the dogs that were there. Buck was Judge Millers inseparable companion, until a man named Manuel, who was one the gardeners helpers, committed a treacherous act. In order to cover his Chinese lottery gambling debts, he stole Buck from his sound sleep and brought him to a flag station called College Park. There, the exchanging of money took place. Buck was loaded onto an express car to Seattle. On his way to Seattle, he found that a man in a red sweater repeatedly beat him. From then on, I knew that Buck would never forget that experience. In that part of the book, I found out that Buck was now an enraged animal and could only be tamed by repeatedly being hit with a club or a whip. At this point of the book, I was thinking about Judge Miller. He wouldve sent out a message or an investigation in order to find Buck. Because Judge Miller had a big house to live in, the book implied that he was wealthy. The trip to Seattle must of taken days and by then, Judge Miller wouldve been worried sick about his inseparable companion. As the story goes on, Bucks first experience of snow left him feeling pretty stupid. When the train got to the station in Seattle, two men named Perrault and Francois bought him. Then, they put him on a ship called the Narwhal. At this point of the book, I was thinking about the cruelty of animals and how the humans treated them. It was cruel, but I guess they didnt care. The Narwhal took Buck to the Yukon where he was trained to be a sled dog. There were other dogs that Buck had grown to know well during his training. In a matter of time, Buck became a great sled dog. Francois and Perrault took the huskies and mix breeds from Dyea Beach to the town of Dawson. There were many conflicts with Buck and Spitz, who was the leader of the dogs. From then on, Bucks motivation was to survive the freezing cold weather of the arctic. Buck was very ambitious to be the leader. In some ways, I find that Buck can be satanic. To become the lead dog of the sled team, he would fight to the bloody death of the lead dog, and that was what he did later on in the book. When I was reading, I noticed something in the writing of Jack London. Francois and Perrault must of came from France or something. Their English was really bad. It took me a while before I could really understand what they were saying. An example of this was when Francois was talking about how there was no other dog like Buck. Nevaire such a dog as dat Buck! he cried. No nevaire! Heem worth one tousan dollair, by Gar! Eh? Wot you say, Perrault? When Spitz was killed, Francois and Perrault didnt even make Buck the leader of the pack. Buck became enraged and pushed himself harder than ever to achieve the roll of being the leader. As days past, Francois and Perrault made the trip to Dawson. By the time they got there, most of the dogs were severely wounded. Some of them had broken legs and some of them were severely sick. The dog that was in best condition was Buck, although he had many wounds and bruises. When Francois and Perrault got to Dawson, Buck was traded to a family who knew absolutely nothing about managing a sled team. This part of the plot didnt seem right. There was a rich family who couldve taken a train to their

the dozens - definition and examples of playing the dozens
the dozens - definition and examples of playing the dozens Definition: A game of put-downs: the rapid, ritualistic exchange of insults, often targeting family members. The rhetorical contest of playing or shooting the dozens (also known as capping, ranking, and sounding) is most commonly practiced by young Africans and Observations, below. African-American Vernacular EnglishBdelygmiaCursingFlytingHyperboleInvectiveName-CallingSignifying Examples and Observations: Your mamas so FAT, after she got off the carousel, the horse limped for a week.Mos rebuttal: Your mamas so skinny, she can hula-hoop through a Froot Loop.Your mamas so FAT, her blood type is Ragu.Mos rebuttal: Your mamas so skinny, she looks like a mic stand.Your mamas so FAT, instead of 501 jeans she wears 1002s.Mos rebuttal: Your mamas so skinny, she turned sideways and disappeared.Your mamas so FAT shes not on a diet shes on a triet. Ill try it.Mos rebuttal: Your mamas so skinny, I gave her a piece of popcorn and she went into a coma.Your mamas so FAT, when she jumped in the air she got stuck.Mos rebuttal: Your mamas so skinny, you could blindfold her with dental floss.(Monique Imes and Sherry A. McGee, Skinny Women Are Evil: Notes of a Big Girl in a Small-Minded World. Atriz, 2004) A Game of InsultsThe dozens is usually played by two young black males, often surrounded by an interested and encouraging audience of peers in which the players insult and provoke eac h other with put-downs of each others mother or other female family members. This process teaches one to take insults in stride while encouraging verbal retorts. . . . The dozens is played more often and more intensely in urban ghettos where frustrations are greater and the strategies of the ghetto are appropriate in a zero-sum game; neither player really wins. The dozens works when the players share a common ethnicity, a degree of connectedness, and acceptance of the activity for what it isa game (Bruhn and Murray, 1985).(John G. Bruhn, The Sociology of Community Connections. Kluwer Acacademic/Plenum, 2005) A Rite of PassageAlan Dundes found that the social and artistic are infused in the Afrodiasporic practice of the dozens, which he notes functions both as an assertion of masculinity and as a rite of passage for the secular mastery of words. The dozens not only establishes a framework for verbal creativity; children also use them to determine a social hierarchy. A good dozens player not only cooly withstands merciless insults to his family; he also twists memorized insults quickly to suit the opponent at hand.(Ali Colleen Neff, Let the World Listen Right: The Mississippi Delta Hip-Hop Story. University Press of Mississippi, 2009) An InoculationWhile retaining the form and spirit of the West African original, African-American dozens has elaborated the witty one-liners into complex verbal war games involving huge armories and modes of attack and defense undreamt of in the homeland. It is a case of Darwinian adaptation for survival of the species in the killing jungles of slavery and ra cism. The mother remains the central figure. By learning to deal with verbal abuse of her, the modern black youngster learns to endure the historical, real-life abuse. It is as if the system is inoculated with virtual (verbally imagined) strains of the virus, thereby gaining immunity and new health in spite of the reality on the ground.(Onwuchekwa Jemie, Yo Mama! New Raps, Toasts, Dozens, Jokes, and Childrens Rhymes From Urban Black America. Temple University Press, 2003) Also Known As: sounding, signifying, ranking, capping, hiking, snapping, playing the dozens

Ersatz Happiness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Ersatz Happiness - Essay Example However, this kind of euphoria is clearly false and robs a personââ¬â¢s right to a substantial life. The different characters in the story also portray hints that being in the new world is not really satisfactory. In the same sense, all the other methods that the Utopians have such as the ââ¬Å"feeliesâ⬠in order to have a ââ¬Å"happyâ⬠life are blemished. The feelies is a kind of a movie theater that is supposed to be the main source of entertainment. In this cinema, the senses are falsely generated. Thus, Utopianââ¬â¢s ersatz happiness equates to a meaningless existence. The author, Huxley, cautions his readers against scientific utopianism. Though his novel was published in 1932, the principles that may be derived from his work are still quite applicable today. Unlike the contemporary utopian novels of his time such as ââ¬Å"A Modern Utopiaâ⬠by H.G. Wells, he sought to picture a pessimistic future. This may be influenced by the industrial revolution that w as quite apparent in the 20th century. There were also particular companies that advocated advancements concerning science and technology such as Imperial Chemical Companies (ICI). In its prime, it was known as the ââ¬Å"biggest chemical group in the UKâ⬠(Bawden 1). This may have influenced Huxleyââ¬â¢s portrayal of pharmacological achievements. ... A number of them could have viewed cutting-edge science as a savior. In addition, due to the unemployment at that time, the use of marijuana was introduced by Mexican immigrants (Monroy 27). Some people used this psychoactive drug to escape reality and experience a moment of elation. This is somehow parallel with Soma which was used to annihilate negative moods. In the story, there are indications that the Utopians felt that something was missing in their existence. They have occasional inklings of dissatisfaction. ââ¬Å"Happiness is not a static state. Even the happiest of people- the cheeriest 10% -feel blue at timesâ⬠(Wallis 2). There is a need to experience painful emotion to truly feel happiness. It is the healthy combination of negative and positive emotion that helps people to make a sense of reality. Without feeling low, it is difficult to realize the opposite. Hence, the people in the new world did not really have euphoria in the real sense. The difference between the so called perfect world and that of the outside is portrayed when the difference between the Savage Reservation and the new world was described. This is especially noticeable in John who was known as ââ¬Å"the savageâ⬠. He spent his early childhood in the Reservation and was brought to Utopia. Indeed, he did not have the culture that denotes a very stable society. However, he still possessed quite humane characteristics such as truthfulness as well as benevolence. Comparably, people who are genuinely happy have more positive attributes. ââ¬Å"Kindness might create a virtuous cycle that promotes lasting happiness and altruismâ⬠(Dixon, ââ¬Å"Kindness Makes You Happy and Happiness Makes You Kind). In which place have you felt most inspired and why Essay
In which place have you felt most inspired and why - Essay Example Lined up along side each another were tens of wooden bunk beds. Then he yelled again: "You!" pointing to one of my friends, "get inside that space" and he pointed towards the space between two bunk beds. Then he yelled again: "Youââ¬âget in next to him!" And so he went on ordering six more of my friends into that space. When we thought it was too much, he just yelled: "Squeeze more!" Finally he stopped, and told my friends who were by now so cramped they couldnt breath, "Now turn to the other side." They were all squeezed in so tightly that turning was impossible. Finally he said: "I didnt turn for three years while I was here. It was cold, we were hungry, and even the most basic act such as turning in your sleep was impossible. It didnt matter if you were black or white, fat or skinny, slow or fast. We were all in the same bed, and NO one could turn." That was Auschwitz, and that was one of the most inspiring moments of my

The company KFC was established as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in the year of 1952, though the idea of establishing this company was in the year back in 1930. Actually KFC was born raised in Henryville Indiana sanders had been conceded throughout several professions in his life time. Also the founder of KFC, Sanders provided the fried chicken for the first time in the year 1930 in the center part of Great Depression at a gas station where he owned in North Corbin, Kentucky. In that particular place the dining room was named as the Sanders Court cafà © it was more successful through the year 1936 then after that Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon granted sanders the designation of honorary Kentucky Colonel, in appreciation of his involvement to the states cuisine. After that the following year he prolonged his restaurant by adding some additional seats of 142 in order to keep the customers come through to the cafà © across the street. In the year of 1939 he alt ered the cookery method for his fried chicken to make use of a pressure fryer, resulting in a very much abridged cookery time similar to that of deep frying. Next in the year of 1950 he sold his properties traveled to U.S to sell his chicken to the owners of restaurants. He penetrated into the franchise agreements by paying five cents for Corbin for selling each one of his chicken piece, in that the first person to have the offer was Pete Harman who lived in south salt lake, Utah after that they both started the first primary Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in 1952. In accordance to that in the early 1960s Kentucky Fried Chicken was vended in more than 600 franchised outlets in both the countries of U.S Canada. One of the oldest franchisee who lived for a long period of time was Kenny kings chain; he is the person who opposed sanders chicken concept. From the time when the chain has been vend for three more times in recent times it has been vend to PepsiCo, which made it part of its Tricon Global Restaurants division, which in turn was spun off in 1997, and has now been renamed to Yum! Brands. They are influencing the people under their position; it means that they are pressurizing the board of directors who in turn pressurize labors to work hard in order to always succeed in the business rather than losing all the money which they have invested. Share holders also have the right to vote to change the board of directors. KFC shareholders get there services under a brand called YUM shareholder services. They are having the power of going against the firm through labor unions, if the company goes against the interest of the workers. Furthermore we can say that they will have some power of ownership over the company if the company provides shares to the employees. KFC has the social responsibility of providing jobs to people though they are uneducated. Through this the countrys unemployment rate comes down. Employees also given a power of recommending other new employees to organization recommending the organization to the society. Competitors have the power of finding the secrets of the products of KFC innovating a substitute product for that in order to gain profit be top of KFC. They will also try to gain information on illegal acts that KFC does try to mediate that to the society. Suppliers Actually suppliers are the single person or a business that offers goods or service which will be inputs for the outputs product of the company. If they strike their products will not come into our company, so our company would face problems in productions this will result in reduction of growth, profitability etc. Supplier has a power of deciding to produce their product to legal and profitability organizations. Even the organization also has the power of getting the products from a legal and reliable supplier. Brands, parent company of KFC, is committed to the humane treatment of animals. Yum! Brands is the owner of restaurant companies and, as such, does not own, raise or transport animals. However, as a major purchaser of food products, we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to influence the way animals supplied to us are treated. We take that responsibility very seriously, and we are monitoring our suppliers on an ongoing basis to determine whether our suppliers are using humane procedures for caring for and handling animals they supply to us. As a consequence, it is our goal to only deal with suppliers who promise to maintain our high standards and share our commitment to animal welfare. To assist us in that effort, Yum! Brands formed the KFC Animal Welfare Advisory Council, which consists of highly regarded experts in the field. The Council provides us with information and advice based on relevant data and scientific research. The Animal Welfare Advisory Council has been a key factor in formulating our animal welfare program. In consultation with our Council, KFC has developed guidelines and audit programs for our suppliers in the broiler industry. We were also a prominent player in the joint effort conducted by the National Council of Chain Restaurants and the Food Marketing Institute to develop comprehensive guidelines for all species of farm animals. KFC has implemented a farm level audit program a program which is industry-leading in the areas of poultry care and handling. http://www.kfc.com/about/animalwelfare.asp You are the World Food Programme (WFP), the food aid arm of the United Nations and the biggest humanitarian organisation working on hunger worldwide. In your mission to tackle world hunger, you work to enable local populations to achieve greater food security and support sustainable solutions to help the approximately 1 billion people around the globe whose access to food remains at risk. How do you go about fulfilling this mission? You team up with fast food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). CORPORATISING FAMINE The specific details of the collaboration between KFC and the WFP are a bit hazy, but their relationship is essentially an exercise in raising money principally in the form of financial donations and staff working hours through charitable activities to fund food rations (in countries including Somalia, India, Rwanda, Colombia and Ethiopia).[2] As part of KFCs World Hunger Relief Week (the worlds largest private sector hunger relief effort, spanning 110 countries, 36,000 restaurants and over one million employees),[3] a further aim is to raise awareness of the issue of world hunger and mobilise staff, franchisees and customers to help do something about it.[4] While the upsurge of goodwill around tackling hunger is a great example of peoples desire to improve our world (Yum!s companies apparently raised a total of US$20 million in overall donations in 2009, with activities involving some 4 million volunteer hours),[5] the main thing being fed is KFCs public relations (PR). Its not clear whether these donations are always channelled through the WFP or to whom the company is ultimately accountable; details for example of KFC UKs contributory funding of Ãâà £365,000 to a school food project in Africa are thin on the ground.[6] And while raising awareness is on the face of it a positive aspect, you have to question the legitimacy of the source of information and the companys ultimate ability to communicate the complex historical constellation of politics, climatic conditions and policy which determines peoples access to food worldwide. In honour of the efforts behind World Hunger Relief, WFP executive director Josette Sheeran has been fulsome in her gratitude to the company: WFP knows how to reach those most in need and will do what it takes to get a cup of food to any kid in the world But without funding, we cant reach these kids. It takes just 25 cents to fill a cup with food. The World Hunger Relief campaign helps fill the cup for tens of thousands of kids and were so grateful for it.'[7] While it is of course of the utmost importance that people around the world facing critically shortages of food supply are assisted and that the primary international institution charged with doing this is fully funded, the very premise that a fast food corporation would be able to bask in reflected glory leaves a bitter aftertaste. In the struggle to create sustainable food systems worldwide, the hyper-capitalist, unrelenting drive to lower supply margins no matter the side effects is part of the problem, not the solution. The notion that KFC can enhance its corporate image and profit through an association with the alleviation of hunger is deeply distasteful, but this, it goes without saying, is precisely its intention. A BUMPER CORPORATE-IMAGE HARVEST What does KFC get out of this association? Well, a simplistic feeding-the-world narrative does the companys image and CSR (corporate social responsibility) a world of good among well-intentioned Western consumers. As the Genuine Kentucky blog puts it, This warms the heart, feeds the spirit, and makes you want to make haste to your nearest KFC.'[8] For fast food companies keen to rebuild the sectors declining image among consumers, such words, even from a blatantly pro-KFC source, are music to the ears. Indeed, for a corporation formerly accused of negligence around suppliers treatment of poultry[9] and alleged purchasing of illegally exported, environmentally destructive Brazilian soy from US commodities giant Cargill,[10] the WFP charm offensive plays a central role in the drive to restore public credibility. In the name of continuing this corporate-image harvest, a more sinister outcome is KFCs capacity push this drive to the point of undermining the credibility of the very UN institutions it purports to support. Witness KFC CEO Roger Eatons efforts to convince UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the need to recognise the Grilled Nation KFCs claim for international acknowledgement as a state among UN member states: As Secretary-General, you have pledged to build a stronger United Nations for a better world. We at KFC are confident that recognizing Grilled Nation will strengthen your organization and satisfy the stomachs of your many Member States.'[11] This absurd UN time-wasting is of course a mere publicity stunt designed to achieve brand exposure. But the focus of such efforts further underlines, if it were even necessary to do so, that KFC is far more concerned with enhancing its own image than working towards sustainable solutions to world hunger, and is quite prepared to trivialise the issue of hunger in the process. As illustrated in an October 2007 press release, parent company Yum! will even go to the extent of claiming responsibility for saving lives: With funds raised, the company hopes to save hundreds of thousands of people from starvation.'[12] You would think that if the company sincerely had that much faith in the WFPs work and was that concerned with saving lives, it would donate all of its net profits to the programme each year. FEEDING PEOPLE, NOT PROFITS As a subsidiary of the United Nations, ostensibly the worlds leading external force working for equality, peace and justice, the World Food Programme should concentrate its efforts on working to promote and protect grassroots and domestic food producers and defend agricultural biodiversity, not team up with dubious, self-interested corporate forces. To do otherwise perpetuates an implicit discrediting of African and other Southern peoples historical ability to feed themselves and a tradition of ingenuity and adaptability rather than of doing the same thing of responding to changing climatic and environmental conditions with skill and intelligence.[13] It also neglects engaging in serious analysis of the problems surrounding food sovereignty in the global South. In a time of an acute food crisis and pervasive food insecurity for much of the worlds population, the immediate and future challenges will remain to work towards food sovereignty. This is to be achieved through investment in agriculture (owned and organised to cater for the needs of people, rather than big business);[14] redressing the problems of speculative food-commodity trading; cushioning small- and medium-holder producers from low-cost, subsidised imports; and creating more secure returns on production. In some respects, if the UN theoretically the international, external body with the greatest legitimacy and clout to defend peoples interests is ill-positioned to halt the corporatisation of this space, why is anybody else going to be strong enough to do so? Dawsonââ¬â¢s Creek, the Movie Woo, A Perfect Storm, and A River Runs Through It :: Television Woo Perfect Story River Runs Essays
Dawsonââ¬â¢s Creek, the Movie Woo, A Perfect Storm, and A River Runs Through It What is it that improves an authorââ¬â¢s writing ability? Is it inborn creativity? In many ways yes, but without a doubt an authorââ¬â¢s ability to write comes from skills that he has acquired through everyday life. One of these skills is the combination of watching and reading. It is not just the ability to watch and read, it is how well he can incorporate these skills into a written work. Television and the movie screen can also be tools in a writerââ¬â¢s tool belt. Dawsonââ¬â¢s Creek (a television drama) and the movie Woo have aspects incorporated into each whole, these aspects finding comparisons in literature. There is no far stretch required to find a correlation between a screen work and a written work. Since it is not hard to find this correlation between screen work and written work there should be no large task in finding helpful tools in several different genres of literature. The written works A Perfect Storm by Junger and A River Runs Through It written by Ma clean offer literary techniques of their own. How can all of these forms of entertainment contribute to the written word? Television adds many qualities to the nineties life. This is even true of the prime time teen angst drama. Dawsonââ¬â¢s Creek (classified with the above prime time teen angst drama) can and does contribute interesting qualities to a written work. This show is a prime example of social interactions. Every character is at least acquainted with every other character, which gives the watcher the chance to see one character in many different situations. The word situation does not always mean social interaction though. Situations encompass the setting also. In television the set is made to be large, bright, and overall catching to the eye. Since a television screen is so small all of the important aspects of the set are brought forth they are easily viewed. This show of blatant importance can help an author decide on what is a really important part of their literature. Television though is not the only tool a writer can take advantage of. Indeed movies can also be of great importance. The motion picture Woo contains several interesting tools, which are readily available to an author. This movie was performed in an English dialect that not many identify with or write with.

American Dream Essay
Another prop used to represent the truth is the flowers. This makes the ending of ââ¬ËDeath of a Salesmanââ¬â¢ effective because when Happy and Biff come home after leaving their dad alone in the restaurant they were meant to eat in but instead left with some girls, Happy comes home with some flowers for his mother, Linda. Linda knocks the flowers out of Happyââ¬â¢s hands out of anger. Linda starts to clean up the mess she has made then realises she has cleaned up enough of her sons messes ââ¬Å"Pick up this stuff, Iââ¬â¢m not you maidâ⬠Linda says. Then the stage direction says ââ¬Å"Happy turns his back to her in refusal. Biff slowly moves over and gets down on his knees, picking up the flowersâ⬠which explains another failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢. I think this proves the difference between the two brothers and how Biff kneels indicating that he can accept the truth and knows that he canââ¬â¢t achieve the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ whereas Happy is more stubborn like Willy into believing the dream so Miller intends he is destined to go in the same direction as Willy, which is another failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢. Another failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ is that Happy follows in his fatherââ¬â¢s footsteps after he knows what happened to him which led to his suicide which makes the ending of the play effective because this play about Willy could repeat it self but would be about Happy. Happy in a way is brainwashed into thinking that he can reach the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ easily because Willy said you just need to be well-liked and masculine when he was younger. Happy is trapped in his own world creating the same tragedy which has already been lived by his father Willy Loman. It also makes the ending of the play effective because Happy still believes in this ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢ when it might not even be real as he doesnââ¬â¢t know anyone who has achieved it. On a materialistic basis, Willy has worked all his life to realize the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ but still fails to do that which makes the ending effective. Willy purchases some seeds for his garden and begins to plant them late at night which is another prop which represents the truth. I think Millerââ¬â¢s intention here was to show the audience that he is close to his suicide but realises that he needs to leave something real and living behind for his family to remember him by. We also know that Willy is close to his suicide because he is planting the seeds at the wrong time of the day, which again I think Millerââ¬â¢s target here was to give more clues to the audience that Willy was very serious about committing suicide soon. I also think that the seeds that Willy plants are symbolic in a way to another failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ because this was Willyââ¬â¢s desire to grow big and tall ironically just like the plant eventually would. At the end of the play Willy is talking to Ben while he is planting the seeds. He talks about how big his funeral will be before he is even dead making the end of the play effective because heââ¬â¢s dreaming about depressing things that will happen after his death for example what his funeral would be like. To be more specific how many people there would be from all over America. This is another failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ because Willy shows that he has definitely given up on this dream that he had talked about all his life implying that he is going to kill himself. He is selling himself off and valuing himself and he acts as if he is making a business deal with himself. He also talks about how much money Biff will get and that he will be in front of Bernard again in terms of money. Bernard was their neighbour who was a clever boy and went to the same school as Biff and Happy. But back then, in the past Willy influenced his sons to just concentrate on being popular so they could accomplish the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ as soon as possible which is a failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ because there is a lack of personality from both Biff and Happy. The stage directions are another significance in the play to represent the failures of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢. At the very end of the play it mentions that the hard towers of the apartment buildings rise into sharp focus. I think Miller illustrates that even though Willy has now gone forever and is dead, the things that Willy hated the most will still be there and the society will move on which is a failure to achieving the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ because he has given up on himself and letting society win over him. In the video each time Willy went back into the past it was always set in the garden where it was bright. The contrast of colours between the clothes that were worn were the colours of the American flag. But in the past the colours were bright colours of red blue and white whereas in the present the clothes worn were more faded and dull colours. I think the costumes designerââ¬â¢s purpose here was to show the difference between the present and the past. I also think that the costume designer used bright colours in the past to illustrate that there was more hope for Biff and Happy to achieve the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ back then. I believe that the audience might respond to the faded colours of clothes worn in the present meaning that the clothes were old, demonstrating that the family could not afford to buy new clothes and other luxuries and this reflects a failure of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ in the film. The ending of the play is effective because itââ¬â¢s a tragedy how Willy still believes in the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ after all he has been through and all the lies he has made up to accomplish this dream. There are many failures of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ which makes the ending of ââ¬ËDeath of a Salesmanââ¬â¢ effective because all these failures are revealed at the end of the play. Overall I think that Arthur Miller makes ââ¬ËDeath of a Salesmanââ¬â¢ an effective ending in terms of presenting the failures of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ by revealing the truth at the end of the play. The ending of the play is appropriate because it unravels all the unknowns throughout the play explaining why things happened and reasons why Willy, Biff and Happy had failed the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ .

THE MONOLOGUE essays
THE MONOLOGUE essays It all started when I was out with the guys at this bar. I told myself I wouldn't, but I ended up drinking. Its hard to go to a bar and not have ANYTHING. I told my wife I wouldn't drink anything, but that idea soon went out of focus...literally. I just needed to take my mind off being so completely in debt. Soon the place became very crowded, a few drinks turned into many and soon got tanked including me. I decided to leave the scene and take a power walk. As I was walking down the street, it occured to me...I really needed some towels from Bed, Bath and Beyond. As I walked in the store I got a basket and started shopping like a maniac. I mean...I went absolutely psycho-path and decided that I need more. It just wasn't the towels that I needed, our house needed blankets, throws, tea kettles, a new filtration system, a ceiling pot rack, napkin rings, lamps, suana robes, a new clock, candle and candles holders and an aerobed for my grandparents since they're coming to visit. They really should have a warning sign right at the entrance of this place, it can put you in debt. Once you step in, you think you need everything. As I was at the cash register to pay for all my items, the lady told me if I wanted cash or credit. I wasn 't sure...just looking at all the items in my basket made me go crazy. I was speechless. She told me to hold up one finger for credit and two fingers for cash. I held up one finger. I then came to my senses and gave her my Mastercard. As she ran it through the machine, the trickles of sweat kept pouring down my face. By the look on her face I knew there was bad news. I heard her deep voice say in super slow motion, "I'm sorry sir, your credit card got denied. Would you like me to swipe it again?" I hate that dreaded word,"denied." I was completely denied. I left all the stuff and ran into my car. Luckily, I knew where it was parked. Sadly, I got a $100 ticket for parking next to a fire hydrant. That just ...

Terrorism in Context 1 Essays
Terrorism in Context 1 Essays Terrorism in Context 1 Essay Terrorism in Context 1 Essay Terrorism in Context 1 Name: Course: Date: Terrorism in Context 1 Part 1 Politicians are there to represent the publicââ¬â¢s interest in congress. They therefore address people many times. They have their own special way in which they talk to citizens. This language is meant to convince the public to follow them and vote for them. Elected officials need to learn how to express themselves in a manner that will convince more people. Some politicians do not tell the whole truth. They have designed a way in which their lies are believable. The audiences they address have therefore associated political language with lies. They perceive that most of what the politicians say is not true. This is because most of the time what the politicians say turns out not to be true. This is seen especially during campaign periods. A politician will say anything so that they can be elected into office. They will promise citizens many things. Most of which they cannot deliver (Carver Pikalo, 2008). Political language has also been used to change how the public perceives certain situations. Since politicians hold offices of power, they are able to change peopleââ¬â¢s views. For instance, if the public was against homosexuality and a politician comes out in support of homosexuals, he or she can convince some people to support the issue. This is an example of how political language can change a personââ¬â¢s perception. It is with the use of this language that citizens have been convinced to change their stand. Political language is thereby highly influential. Part 2 The process of motivation and commitment among terrorists are many. Terrorists are usually angry and frustrated about the state of affairs in the world. They feel that there are countries that are infringing the rights of other people. They take it upon themselves to defend these peopleââ¬â¢s rights. They feel that they are revolutionaries. Terrorists are motivated by religious beliefs and hatred towards leaders and countries. They feel that they are justified to protect their beliefs against leaders that are representing their rights. They oppose what the governments believe in and know that it is their right to correct this situation. Part 2a Members of terrorist groups are recruited in different ways. They are lured into these groups with the promise of money and a greater life after death. They are often promised that their families will be protected and looked after. They are given a promise for a better life. Members are also recruited from schools. These students had radical views against the government. Therefore, they were ideal candidates as they already oppose the government (Crenshaw, 1995). Part 2b The recruits are often from poor backgrounds. They are from families that cannot afford necessities of life. They are shown that they can afford a better lifestyle for their families through terrorism (Crenshaw, 1995). Part 2c Leaders of the groups sustained commitment and motivation through various ways. They had to make sure that the recruits do not forget the cause. Therefore, they made sure that the families of deceased soldiers were taken care of. They ensured that the recruits led comfortable lifestyles. Recruits always had money to buy anything they needed. This offered them security. They were also protected especially in countries with political unrest. They also made sure that the recruits were continuously reminded of the cause for terrorism. They showed the negative side of the government. They used religion to back their reasons for terrorism. They misquoted scriptures to fit their cause (Crenshaw, 1995). The Turning Point of World War II Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Turning Point of World War II - Essay Example Even though the United States was a world power with enormous resources - therefore earning the wariness of the Axis powers - it sat all the way on a different continent. The problem for the Allies was how to leverage these resources to win the war (ibid). The shipping lanes were already rank with the danger of German Uboats making the delivery of supplies and materiel dangerous. The Japanese owned the Pacific waters having built up their naval forces to include a dizzying armada or carriers, battleships, cruisers and destroyers. The pre-emptive strike at Pearl Harbor was meant to totally destroy the American naval force, which was seen by the Japanese as a threat to their Pacific dominance. In the face of the Axis momentum and advantage, America was faced with battle at two fronts, the European and Pacific. They believe that to win the war, victory in Europe against Hitler and Mussolini was imperative before tackling the Japanese(ibid). Therefore it was with this strategy that the Allied forces decided to halt the Axis onslaught. The tide turned in the favor of the Allies inexorably on both fronts during the Russian victory at Stalingrad and the British victory at el-Alamein. In the Pacific, it was the battle of Midway that capped a change of momentum to the Allied forces' favor. The battle at El Alamein - w... If the Germans were successful in broaching those lines, it would have spelled disaster for the Allies, particularly so because it was perilously close to the Suez Canal, a vital shipping link. (Kennedy, et al., 436). The Germans Afrikaa Corps were led by Field Marshall Irwin Rommel, nicknamed the Desert Fox for his daring and cunning in battle. Rommel caught the admiration and esteem of even his Allied foes, and was well-respected as a battle commander. The British forces, led by General Bernard Montgomery, and supplemented by several hundred Sherman tanks pushed back the German forces to Tunisia, 1000 miles away. (ibid) Another major setback for the Germans was their surprising defeat at Stalingrad. Hitler had hoped to sweep through the Russian motherland in a quick and timely fashion. However, Hitler underestimated the Russian winter and the determined resistance by the Russian Red Army. This led to many strategic errors. The German army subsequently had to tie up much resources and time towards conquering Russia. Their defeat was costly, not only in terms of men, supplies, and war materiel, but also strategically. El Alamein was costly because it signified the loss of one of Germany's best generals. Rommel was called back to Germany, and following his implication in an attempted assassination of Hitler, was forced to commit suicide. The Russian and African setbacks pushed back the forces of Hitler at with great casualties. From this point onwards, the Germans were on the defensive, suffering from the effects of having too many objectives and spreading their forces out too thin in the face of a greater opponent (Bailin et al., 762). Midway and the Pacific The Pacific Theater was different from the European theater in the sense that it was

The New Deal by Paul Keith Conkin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The New Deal by Paul Keith Conkin - Essay Example The author stresses that it was of the effort of Roosevelt, that the American people were able to realize the reasons for Great Depression and began to accept it as an inevitable one. The opening chapter introduces us to Franklin Roosevelt and all about his political actions. The book also explores the New Deal's measures in the third chapter by stressing that all the attempts which were taken to put an end to the problem of unemployment in real sense met with failure. The author tells that though the intension and the notion of such actions were acceptable, the implementation was not proper. This is the real cause of the failure according to the author. Not much is indicated or explained about the suffering of the impoverished, unemployed workers in particular. Later, the author expresses his conception about the Welfare State and this part is very interesting. Conkin does not view the New Deal as a class conflict; rather his treatment is analytical and more sophisticated. We could see throughout the book, Conkin tries to give importance to the implications of the social welfare and places the labour relations in the second place as opposed to the leftists. Later, we are provided with some account of the welfare legislation, which according to the author has promised much and delivered little.
